WHAT TO BRING
Fishing
Rods
Reels
Tackle Box
Net (1 per boat)
Depth Finder (1 per boat)
Minnow Bucket (1 per boat)
Worm Container (optional, Dinty Moore Beef Stew Cans work nice)
Stringer (Sometimes nice to have two per boat)
Needle Nosed Pliers, Clippers, Knife (Tether for your pliers, you know who you are)
Clothes
Couple pair of pants
Few pair of shorts
Underwear (one of the most frequently forgotten Items)
Socks (another frequently forgotten item)
A couple of towels
Two pair of shoes
Flip Flops or slippers for the Cabin
Fitted sheet for mattress (optional, and by optional, I mean Trent is the only person who does this)
Hat (At least one that has the ability to cover your ears)
Rain Suit (This is not optional and make it the last thing you put in your duffle bag)
Miscellaneous
Sunblock (In 2009 we were 10 feet from the sun for about 4 days)
Bug Spray (It better have deet or you are wasting your money)
Fillet Knife
Sunglasses (May want to consider an extra pair as well)
Clear safety glasses (great for the driver of the boat in the evenings, keeps the bugs out of your eyes)
Stick a golf or small towel in your tackle box.
Krazy glue – Great for patching up small cuts
Flashlight and batteries – The walk from one cabin to the other gets a lot longer in the dark.
Camera – Disposable or Digital – If digital, don’t forget the batteries
Any tobacco products you might use – Sweet lord, you don’t want to buy it up there.
Tips:
Line your duffel bag with a big trash bag before you put your clothes in it (It will rain on the way up or down the river) and put an extra one in there for on the way back if need be.
Wash your hands before taking your contacts out. (I found this out the hard way, not only does in burn like heck but bug spray is impossible to get off your contacts)
Bring some type of waterproof bag to keep your raingear in the boat (Also handy when you start peeling off layers)
I was hoping we could find a way to do 3 rides. Larry bought a cap and Dad said it can do 4 adults. What do you think is their anyway?
ReplyDeleteThe only way we could do that would be to find a vehicle to seat 7 comfortably. 850 miles seems like an awfully long way to go with 14 people in 3 vehicles. I will do it if everyone wants to. If we had Dad's van maybe. If we end up taking my car as the fourth vehicle, it will cost about 20-25 bucks a man for the whole trip. The real downside is that we will have 4 people driving all the time. But even at that with 10 people it isn't too bad. I'll do what everyone wants to do but it it seems silly to do it if we don't have to.
ReplyDeleteI vote for being comfortable, but let me run one more idea by you. Dad was against 2 guys in the back seat of a truck because he said it was too small. He was over at Larry's looking at his truck and said that Larry's truck had a lot more room behind the seat and it would be no problem to have 2 guys ride back there. So that being said. What if we take Larry's truck with the cab, and Uncle Steve's truck with the cover. They both have bumper hitch's so we can put the cargo racks on if we need them. That would be 4 in each truck and 6 in the van. That should give us plenty of room to sit since we have 4 smaller young adults, and should be enough room for gear. This plan hinges on 2 factors. Is Steves back seat big enough for 2 guys and will Dad be alright leaving his truck at home? When is the last time we made the trip without Dad's truck.
ReplyDeleteThat is brilliant. What would your dad's truck think being left behind for the first time in God knows how many years? Dad's truck has a full back seat. 2 adults or three kids easily.
ReplyDeleteHere is something to think about. I believe Larry and Uncle Steve's Trucks are both 6 foot beds. I don't know if we will be able to get all of the gear in them. Just something to think about. Also, I would vote for 3 vehicles, especially when gas will be around $5 per gallon. I think our best bet is Dad's truck, Larry's truck and Troy's van.
ReplyDeleteYour dad's truck, Larry's Truck and Troy's van doesn't give us enough room. Dad has a full sized bed I think. We could easily get all the stuff in those two trucks. I don't care what we do but Bob's, Larry's and Troy's only leaves room for 13 max.
ReplyDeleteFour in Larry's truck, three or four in Dad's truck depending on if we put a bed in the back, and 6 or 7 in the van. You need to have a little more faith in our packing ability.
ReplyDeleteI vote for Larry and Steves trucks. Unless there is room for 4 in Dad's truck. 2 trucks with the luggage racks should be enough room. I think 7 in the van is too many if we can help it. I would rather the luggage be cramped for 800 miles than the people.
ReplyDeleteWhy are we focused on four in the front of Dad's truck? With two trucks with caps on them we should be able to make a bed in the back of Dad's. I would have no problem riding back there. I believe we are getting soft in our old age.
ReplyDeleteYour lazy ass needs to be driving. Not sleeping. I think it is clear who is getting soft. Anyway you want to do it is fine with me, I just would rather stick to 3 cars and would like everyone to be comfortable. I have heard Dad mention in the past it would be nice to not have to drive. We will work it out. I was thinking the Van might look like a school bus to kindervgarden. Theron, JJ, and I with the three boys. The rest of you chumps can work out the other details. Sounds like we need a meeting with all trucks their for inspection. We may even need to hold court to figure this out.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't matter to me, I just like stirring the shit. I also think it is important to stick to three vehicles. Gas could seriously be at $5 per gallon by the time we go. I guess however we decide to go, we need to stress packing light. Combine tackle boxes, rod cases, duffle when we can- it will al help save space. I'm thinking around 30-35 cases of beer will be the order of the week. It wouldn't surprise me if this trip is close to 1,500 per person (adult). It will all be worth it when I kick everyone's ass again.
ReplyDeleteTrent, don't forget that we are going in July. The back of that truck could get plenty warm. I will do what everyone wants to do but if 850 miles without A/C makes me soft then I will gladly wear that label. Gas could also be 2.50 a gallon by the time we leave, Negative Nelly. If this is the way you are going to be about this trip then I may reconsider the relaxation portion of this trip. This could turn into a business trip pretty quick.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe you are playing the "July in the back of a truck" card. There isn't any difference between June, July, or August to a man desparately looking to get to Canada. I would be willing to make a side wager that gas won't be under $3.50 a gallon anytime in July. Ryan, if you keep talking I just might have to put a repeat performance of 2009 on your ass. It would be like taking candy from a baby. I just hope you have enough class to net all my fish this year.
ReplyDeleteTexas Bob says my truck,Larry's truck and Troys van should be suffecient. Pack light ,necessities only,no extra fun and games. Official update Bernie is in. 14 is a full camp. We will discuss the travel plans at the first meeting at ___________ house.
ReplyDeleteTexas Bob
When you say pack light, does that mean you old guys ae leaving your huge boat seats? I mean 6 of those are an extra flighton their own.
ReplyDeleteTroy - Good point. Interesting.
ReplyDeleteTrent - First night bartender to the loser of the wager. I'm in. Also, basically what you are saying here is that given the choice, you would choose to ride in the back of an un-air conditioned truck for 850 miles over paying 25 dollars. This seems odd to me.
Texas Bob - Here is something to consider, if we put a bed in the back of one of those trucks that only leaves cargo room up to the wheel wells. If we take two trucks that seat four poeple, even if one of them doesn't have a cap, we get the cargo room all the way to the tonneau cover. I don't know if you think this will be an issue, but with 14 guys it very well could.
Ryan, if it means not riding with you so I don't have to listen to you over think everything, then so be it. I think we should just look into mailing all of our stuff. Maybe Richard could have everything at the top of the hill by the time we get there. I don't care what we do as long as the fish are biting and the beer is cold.
ReplyDeleteFor you, we should probably just concentrate on the beer being cold. It would take the hand of God himself to help you with the other.
